Building advanced information infrastructure
Research in this project ranges from basic communication technologies and application technologies to those technologies considering the social system, for establishing an Internet-based advanced information infrastructure.
The Internet has proved that it contributes greatly to societal functions including economy, health care and education as well as to personal communications such as letters and telephones. However, to enable free communication on an-individual basis in a global space and to construct a social system based on it, we have to confront many challenges that humankind has never experienced before. This project is conducting research into ultra high-speed Internet technology as a social base, satellite Internet technology to enable its diffusion, application technology for societal functions and to enable integrated evaluation on policy and tactics to promote all of these.
There are four fields for research:
The features of this project include an autonomous distributed cooperative system to enable integrated pursuit of tasks so far made separately by each group by sharing test beds, cooperating on demonstration mechanisms, and editing research results. For example, integration of leading-edge research with social importance such as social systems or intellectual property, establishment and evaluation of application systems, distribution of high-speed digital video, quality control, IPv6 and advanced optical communication technology has enabled the deployment of content and achievement of research to society and to shift classes at universities into an Internet-based form.
We are constructing ultra-high speed test beds that link SFC, the Yagami campus and Internet bases all over the world and are engaged in the research and development of high-speed network technology and its operation technology. In addition, relationships between multicast, satellite communication technology which is strongly expected to be used for international deployment and the Internet has been established by constructing an Asian test bed that uses the Ku and C band satellite spectrums. This enables a joint-research system with leading-edge research groups in the U.S. and the Europe. A good example of this is the SOI (School of Internet) research that holds classes at a university over an advanced Internet system. It conducts comprehensive research on social influence and the meaning of demand on an advanced Internet as well as its technical achievements.
We propose a next-generation advanced information infrastructure in terms of technical and social aspects along with meaningful research results.
