Integrated Research on the Establishment and Application of E-care Society

Keio Research Institute at SFC is conducting a research project called "Integrated Research on the Establishment and Application of E-care Society" for the next five years starting in the academic year 2005. This project is funded by the Promotional Project for Advancement of Academic Researches at Private Universities of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan (MEXT). The project started in the academic year 2002-3 as the E! Project organized by the Ministry of General Affairs and is now an interdisciplinary project involving the whole Shonan Fujisawa Campus.

This project aims to improve social 'care' by establishing a new social system which takes into account both the aging of Japanese society and rapidly declining birthrate, using the high-edge fundamental technology, such as nursing science, medical welfare engineering, information and communications technology. Furthermore, this project aims to validate the E-care system and to apply it to the general society.

Research Groups

This research center projects consists of three research groups, where each group works both autonomously and collaboratively.

E-care Entity Group

This group focuses on the individual who constitutes the basic unit of society and defines the symbiotic roles that the individual and the environment should play to nurture social care.

The Health Support Program for People with Mental Retardation and Autism uses information technology from the standpoint of a nurse to support people with mental retardation and autism. Many people with mental retardation, especially those suffering from communication disorders, have difficulty in maintaining health, and in recognizing and treating their illness. Based on this fact, the program in 2005 provides information on dental treatment using the IT so that people with mental retardation and their family members can be psychologically prepared before the treatment.

This service was designed based on the suggestions made by the Fujisawa Dental Association and family members of people with mental retardation and autism. In academic year 2006 and onwards the service content will be revised based on further collaboration with the dentists and family members. The ultimate aim of this project is to spread a better understanding of physical problems faced by people with mental retardation and help them to lead better lives.

E-care Relationship Group

The group assumes that a marked improvement in the levels of care is possible if the dissemination of information is based on good relationship and trust between:
a. people,
b. people and organizations, and
c. people and environment.
Some of the main research topics in this area are information distribution of care-related services, self-care support for people receiving care, and parenting education.

E-care HRC Relationship Group (available in Japanese)

HRC Relationship Group has developed an exercise program for elderly people based on a comprehensive model of society-based care system. This exercise program is designed to maintain the basic physical movement and body strength according to age, and also to enable elderly people to live in their own homes. The project makes it possible for some participants living in Fujisawa City (especially the Oba area) to continue living in their homes in spite of health concerns or liability for other family members. The project also conducts lectures on maintaining health.
