Objectives

Utilizing the results of research, education and activities conducted by Professor Atsushi fc.keio.ac.jpkuda's Laboratory for Arabic Islamic Studies over the past fourteen years, and a wide-reaching overseas network of research bases, the aim of this research will be to conduct comprehensive research activities and provide research results covering basic studies, area studies, and applied studies/activities relating to Islam and the Islamic world.

  1. Basic Islamic studies will utilize the scriptures and other important documents to organize and review basic concepts relating to halal and haram within sharia (Islamic law).
  2. Islamic area studies will build research bases and aim to network these locations, so as to examine halal business and halal foods, mainly with respect to Japan, while keeping the entire Moslem world within view.

Applied Islamic studies/activities will focus on an halal manual project, halal business/halal food examination/halal life planning project, a workshop to promote general Islamic understanding and an Arabic language course project, projects providing restoration support within the Islamic world and research on water and energy.

Research outline

Basic Islamic studies: Reread sections of the holy Koran pertaining to the words and deeds of the holy prophet and other scriptures as they relate to halal and haram, and reorganize and review these concepts.
Islamic area studies: Utilize Okuda Laboratory's wide Islamic network, from Indonesia to Senegal, to examine halal business and halal foods both within and outside of Japan; ORF session.
Applied Islamic studies/activities: Create "Halal Manual", guidelines on how to interact with followers of Islam in a variety of scenarios; Provide support for Arab Students Welcoming Program (ASP); Libya restoration support project (collaboration with JICA); Aleppo restoration support program (collaboration between Japan Center for Academic Cooperation at Aleppo University and Graduate School for Japanese Research; with due consideration to the current situation). One project will also make preparations to set up a workshop to promote general Islamic understanding and the Arabic language course. Will also participate in research on water and energy security (participate in NEDO project and publication of translation of "Water Security").
The results of overall studies will be introduced over the next three years in the free paper published by Professor Okuda's Laboratory, "Hayat".
