Pre Research in Wales and Ireland

by Maki Ueda, March-April 1998

"The memory of oil spill" has become the trigger of this project.

In the previous year, Fujihata Laboratory at Keio University has realized Spilt Oil Swap Project. It was to represent the spilt oil beach with the oil photo image printed on 40 sheets of 1.3m square meters cloths. The exhibition toured along the coast of Japan Islands and took place at the 14 locations.

The Welsh artist, Glenn Davidson, was deeply impressed by this project from his memory of the oil spill in the Wales, UK, where he is based in. Then we have started to think of the workshop on the beach to share the same interest for oil spill and the marine environment around us with the wide public.

The beach in the South Wales. Oil covered whole beach when the supertanker Milford Heven leaked tons of oil in Feburary 1996.

The ARTHOUSE Multimedia Center for the Arts in Dublin, Ireland was initialy interested in the Spilt Oil Swap Exhibition so we had a meeting for a future possibilities.

In the meantime the public conference about the Irish marine policy was taking place in Dublin and Maki met Karin Dubsky from Coastwatch Europe.
