1.はじめに
筆者の研究テーマは、「カナダ少数・先住民族の社会・文化的変化に関する研究」である。
本報告書は2005年7月28日〜9月18日の期間、筆者がカナダ国ヌナブト準州でフィールド・ワークをおこなった記録である。ヌナブト準州はカナダにおいて1999年4月1日に新たに誕生した準州であり、総人口約30,000人の85パーセントを先住民族イヌイットで占める。上記期間内、ヌナブト準州内の各コミュニティーを訪れ、イヌイットの家庭に滞在し、フィールド・ワークをおこなった。フィールド・ワークの方法としては、参与観察、インタビュー調査、におい・かおり調査の3つの方法をとった。冒頭で研究の概要を述べ、その後、フィールド・ワークのスケジュール表、各方法論についての報告を簡単に記し、最後に今後の課題とフィールド・ワークの反省を記している。
2.研究の概要
現在、カナダにおける少数民族・先住民族社会を取り巻く環境は大きく変化している。1960年代から始まった先住民族の権利運動により、各先住民族グループは政府とさまざまな協定を締結してきた。極北の先住民族・イヌイットに関して言えば、1993年に政府と締結した「ヌナブト協定」により、旧北西準州より分離独立し、1999年4月1日にカナダの新たな準州として、ヌナブト準州が誕生した。本研究の目的は、諸権利を獲得した代表的事例として、カナダ・ヌナブト準州内のイヌイットを参与観察、インタビュー調査、におい・かおり調査をすることにより、ここ50年あまりの急激な変化による先住民族の社会・文化的変化を明らかにすることにある。
3.フィールド・ワークのスケジュール表
下記にフィールド・ワークのスケジュール表を記す。インタビュー調査、におい・かおり調査はそれぞれ実施した期間を記した。参与観察に関しては、常時おこなっているものなので、特に記さない。なお、計画書で提出した予定より若干変更した。

4.フィールド・ワークの方法
基本質問

イヌイットを対象とした一般質問
1) Where was your family originally from? In the past the Canadian government relocated many people of the north. Did this happen to your family (ancestors)? If yes, where was your family relocated from? Do you recall any stories about the relocation?
2) Did you or any one in your family attend residential schools? What were they like?
3) In your opinion in what ways have Inuit lifestyles changed over the years? Have lifestyles changed since the establishment of Nunavut? For example, has the standard of living improved? Are salaries higher---do you make more money now that Nunavut is a territory?
4) How has Inuit culture and traditions changed? Or have they remained relatively unchanged? Have there been changed in Inuit culture since Nunavut became a territory?
5) How would you describe Inuit identity today? Has it changed from the past?
6) Have your perceptions of Inuit people and their culture changed since Nunavut was established?
