Beach Scan Workshop Project

International Research Project of Mori Fund 1998

This project is to seek for the workshop which enables us to share interest for the ocean/beach internationally with the media technology and art.

The Welsh artist, Glenn Davidson who is based in Wales, UK and Karin Dubsky, the founder of CoastWatch Europe and is based in Ireland, have been our great collaborators.

We have started to think of the workshop on the beach to share the same interest with the wide public for the rich marine environment around our islands and for the disasters as oil spill as well.

Pre Research in Wales and Ireland (March -April 1998)

From the meeting on this trip we have got an idea of "Scanning the Beach" in the approach to capture the state of the beach with the visual image.

Beach Scanning Workshop Proposal (July 1998)

This proposal was made based on the idea of "scanning the beach" to form the international project among Wales, Ireland, and Japan.

Beach Images Research at Enoshima Koshigoe Beach in Japan (August 1998)

This experiment seeks for the interesting objects found on the beach with more than 200 digital images taken with digital camera, simulating scanning the beach.

Research / Discussion in the Ireland (August - September 1998)

Discussion in England (September 1998)

Over these discussions in a very few chance we have exchanged ideas in the wide range of possibilities, but still we have not come to the concrete idea. Next step is to unite our interest and form the workshop with organizing the realistic possibilities in the aspects of human resources / funding / technological supports. We have to say that we are still now at the starting point.
