Objective

Research Institute aims to achieve the following: a new film production style, a new distribution system, a new performance system resulting from the digitization of cinemas (not just converting film into a digital format) and a new business model so that the digital contents industry in Japan can be globally competitive. This institute focuses on the establishment of a technology and business infrastructure for developing a digital short film market and a new image-creation business.

Research on digital cinema has been conducted at the Digital Cinema Research Consortium for the past two years with support from researchers in Japan and abroad as well as governmental agencies. The activities at the Consortium have been favorably received by critics including those at the “Semaine Internationale de la Critique, Festival International du film de Cannes”. In addition, interactive cinema experiments, experiments in remote recording over a network and experiments in the home distribution of digital cinema have attracted a lot of attention from the media both in Japan and overseas. We hope to strengthen the foundation of the Research Institute so that it can be a place for further strategic development of the Digital Cinema Research Consortium.
