Objectives
In recent years, the role of data in sports has become increasingly important. Not only player profiles but also their training histories and their records from competitions are all accumulated on a daily basis and used for coaching and developing strategies. The same is true for biomechanical data gained from quantification of human motion, as well as medical and physiological data on conditioning. We have decided to collectively call these concepts “sports data.” The primary objective of this laboratory will be to develop methods for measuring and analyzing sports data acquired through scientific technique and information technology (IT), as well as developing methods for accumulating and visualizing sports data. The secondary objective of this laboratory will be to disseminate the appeal of sports by providing training and coaching based on acquired scientific knowledge for, not only competitive sports, but also a wide range of sports enjoyed by all citizens including children, the elderly, and disabled persons. In order to accomplish these two objectives, this laboratory will use sports science and the SFC’s unique advantages to create its own system consisting of the experts from a wide variety of disciplines.
Outline of Research Activity Plans
In 2018, the laboratory will actively formulate and present proposals on how we can change our society according to the human movement analysis data obtained through research activities. Current phenomena in Japan, such as decreasing birthrates combined with an aging population and a super mature society, can occur anywhere around the world in the future. Therefore, we will conduct our research on what the ideal state of sports and exercise is in Japan, the forerunner in dealing with such changes in the society, and will actively publish and report the outcome using occasions such as the SFC Open Research Forum, one of the main events of the SFC.
