■ Objective
The goal of this laboratory is to develop an internet architecture with a mind on trust in order to enable everyone to utilize the internet with a sense of reassurance. The laboratory will work in a broad range of areas that require concrete studies, involving not only architecture design and software development but also standardization, operation and deployment as well as system design.
What the laboratory aims for is to develop a communication platform that is created as an overlay above the existing internet, which enables human beings to have its social activities online while ensuring the safety and security of each person. To achieve this, the mechanism for ensuring individual safety and security—which the internet had not been equipped with at the time it began and which is just barely being achieved thus far by a combination of various supplementary elements—must be redeveloped from a global perspective. The key to realizing our goal is to have a mechanism that would formulate trust. And for the core of this mechanism, we believe it is extremely important to establish a digital identity that is in accordance with the characteristics of the internet and that can be implemented globally. Based on this thinking, our mission is to reconsider the internet architecture in a way that is mindful of the broad usage of digital identity.
Research themes that are currently being planned by this laboratory are as follows:
Research themes
– Digital identity
– Web architecture
– Network protocol
– Application protocol
– System design
– Deployment
Please note that a part of the activities of this laboratory will proceed in collaboration with the Trusted Web Promotion Council, an organization established based on a proposal of the Blockchain Laboratory at the Keio Research Institute at SFC and is expanding its activities within the Cabinet Secretariat’s Digital Market Competition Council. Because of this, many of the initial activities have overlapping areas. Also, Trusted Web mainly conducts discussions in the application layer, but the activities at this laboratory is different in that it is not only confined to the application layer but also looks at reevaluating the internet protocol itself.
