Objective

This laboratory will conduct research on advanced Web applications based on prevalent Web technology infrastructure in order to build a Web-based business infrastructure currently unavailable anywhere in the world. We will identify the needs for unprecedented services not offered in any country, and research the technical elements, or seeds, and applications that will fulfill those needs. Our research will target high-speed Internet environments and the advanced Internet environments for mobile usage, both characteristic of the Japanese market.

In researching seeds, we will focus primarily on Japanese businesses but also form collaborations with businesses in Asia, Europe, and the United States. As part of an effort to contribute internationally, we will propose some of our findings as international standards by working with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the international standardization body for Web technology. Our applied research will attempt to build a business infrastructure by collaborating with businesses and discuss its development and applications.

Although Web technology originally spawned from IT devices such as PCs, its entry into the mobile phone market has led to its further development into a technology now harnessed by individual devices. Much attention is being directed to Web applications involving personal devices such as audio and visual entertainment products, home appliances, and healthcare devices. Given Japan’s wealth of electronics manufacturers and one of the world’s most advanced Web usage environments, it is Keio University’s intent that this research develop into a core organizational foundation supportive of cooperatives between industry and education.
