Objectives

As we face a shrinking population and aging society, the task of drastically reconsidering a model for sustainable regional development has become an urgent issue. Local communities in Japan conventionally had mutual-aid systems to solve issues, such as Ko (groups that originally gathered to recite the nenbutsu, a simple Buddhist chant but were organized for joint financing of various projects, care of orphans, etc.) and Yui (ad hoc groups formed to cooperate on tasks such as funerals, the building of homes, or the repair of thatched roofs, but the ko gradually came to perform comparable functions). However, these kinds of community-based structures have not been functioning recently, and so Japan is currently in the process of trial and error for how it will deal with the situation in the future. On the other hand, technological progress centering on ICT has been remarkable, and there are high expectations that this will act as a catalyst towards solving the country’s regional issues.
In light of this situation, this laboratory will collaborate with Oimachi, Shinagawa City, Tokyo for conducting social experiments to gain practical wisdom for developing future local communities. Specifically, we will carry out empirical and practical research projects that employ approaches from multiple perspectives including the environment, architecture, urban planning, technology, and the community. Furthermore, the laboratory will present a future regional development model that fully utilizes local resources and helps enrich the well-being of people. Ultimately, we aim to establish the SFC way of “design science” that explores how things ought to be, and pave the way to a new world of regional revitalization.

Outline of Research Activity Plans
