■Objectives
In recent years, the following areas have been attracting a lot of attention and expectations: NeuroMusic (neurosciences and music), which seeks to understand music from the perspective of the neural origin of music and the potentials for its medical and health applications; CompMusic (comparative/computational musicology), which studies the origins and universality of music by using comparative and computational methods to quantify and compare cultural diversity throughout the world; and Computational Creativity, which expands musical expression and human creativity through artificial intelligence technologies. In these present times when research frameworks themed to music and the possibilities of artistic expression are changing dramatically, the question arises as to what kinds of research, creation, and expression we should be conducting with regards to music. The x-Music Laboratory conducts its research and artistic activities by crossing beyond the boundaries of various cultures, arts, and academic areas (= Crossing, ”x”), while also exploring the origins, universality, and adaptability of music, with the objective of creating and developing the next and still unknown music culture (=ne”x”t Music) that has yet to be named.
■Overview of Research Activity Plans
- Develop the infrastructure and environment for the Laboratory
Host the: academic project “Music,” SFC-x-Music Night (Music event within the university hosted by the lab), SFC2045 (DJ/VJ event outside of the university hosted by the lab and themed to AI), art exhibits, and events. Form partnerships, collaborative agreements, and joint research agreements with music-related companies. Establish x-Music Consortium, etc.
- Activities to globalize and promote the research activities of the Laboratory
Plans are being made to give presentations at various international academic conferences related to music science (International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, NeuroMusic Conference, International Society for Music Information Retrieval), and to host an international music science symposium (The Science of the World’s Music: Past, Present, and Future). Create a place for music scientists, musicologists, artists, private companies and other organizations in society to come together and hold global discussions on the past, present, and future of music, and broadly promote the activities of x-Music Laboratory toward those outside of the university.
- Establish the SFC x-Music Institute and deploy activities that look toward creating global sites. Work with music research institutions around the world, and actively network with various people and conduct global joint research. Work with companies and society to host live music performances, art events, and exhibits. Make use of the framework of the x-Music Consortium while further strengthening partnerships and collaborations with companies and individuals that support the creation and development of an unknown, next-generational music culture.
