Objective
In the last decade of the twenty-first century, the way human beings and computers interact has altered dramatically. We have moved from a conventional Graphical User Interface-based communication system (GUI) to the ubiquitous computing environment. Indeed, computers are now used in heterogeneous places ranging from offices and schools to homes and airplanes. Obviously, in a post-GUI era computer design must take into account the unique relationship that now exists between man and machine. The new and ubiquitous man-machine interface requires a comprehensive methodology that ‘interaction design’ supplies. With this view in mind the Interaction Design Laboratory was created.
The Laboratory therefore generates new concepts and designs of computers that allows better user interface. The guiding principle behind our entire endeavor is to create new artificial design that goes beyond the conventional personal computer to a level where an interactive design supports human life.
Laboratory Research Timeframe
Phase 1 (June 2005 to March 2006):
- Establish the conceptual framework and chalk out schedules for the operation of the laboratory
- Launch the Interaction Design Project consortium
- Apply interaction design techniques in public space (First Case)
- Hold the First Interaction Design Exhibition in February 2006
- Create human resource network through design activities
- Initiate collaborative projects with governmental and non-governmental organizations such as the National Museum of Ethnology, University of Toronto, Ochanomizu University et cetera
Phase 2 (April 2006 to March 2007):
- Practice interaction design in public and private space (Second Case)
- Hold a Second Interaction Design Exhibition in February 2007
- Create a human resource network through design activities
- Initiate new collaboration and continue old ones
- Evaluate the progress of research activities in mid term
Phase 3 (April 2007 to March 2008):
- Practice interaction design in public and private space (Third case)
- Hold the Third Interaction Design Exhibition in February 2008
- Finalize research results
- Evaluate research activities
- Examine the feasibility of continuing similar activities in the future
