Objectives
Today, in comparison to the progress made in the development of information technology, there have been little changes to the infrastructure (social foundation), interface, and system of legal fields such as law and contracts. When new technologies emerge, many unnecessary discussions are conducted separately by technology and field for developing social systems including the legal systems of those fields, and it is thought that there are few infrastructures that accumulate technology and know-how in order to develop systems focusing on “people” across domains. Under these circumstances, the Legal Design Lab focusing on a need to design Human Law Interaction (HLI) on the premise of the latest technology for the development of social systems centered around “people” across domains.
The objectives of this laboratory are (1) to draw blueprints of legal/social systems and HLI in leading-edge domains, as well as to develop the protocols (methodology) of legal/social system development and implementation in leading-edge domains; (2) to develop or construct systems or the infrastructure and interface of laws/contracts for the next generation using technology and design; (3) to consider law not as a simple regulation, but as a lubricant for promoting innovation, and to promote the development of human resources (legal designers) who can conduct HLI designs, and promote that mindset (legal design mindset) to society.
Outline of Research Activity Plan (First Year)
First, draw HLI and social systems blueprints including the legal systems of lead-edge domains such as those listed below:
Examples of leading-edge domains:
- AI, robots
- 3D printers, digital fabrication
- Bio/genome
- Blockchains/smart contracts
- Privacy
- Space
Afterwards, the protocol and methodology of developing and implementing social systems including legal systems in leading-edge domains will be developed based on the social systems and HLI blueprints.
