Objective

It has become general knowledge that the concept of “platform” is essential in discussing network society or network industry. At our laboratory, platform is defined as “a product or service available to all persons based on clearly-defined conditions that provide an infrastructure for revitalizing transactions with a third party or creating new business opportunities.” For example, the browser is a platform that connects many companies and individuals to other persons, and a credit card is also a platform that connects various businesses with consumers. Without these, it would be impossible to realize today’s Internet business. At our Laboratory, we look into platforms that play important roles in today’s economy and society, exploring various factors including its definition, its possibilities within society, and its most appropriate method of operation. Through such research, we seek to explore how platforms can be best designed to achieve both creativity and continuity in its operation.
