Objective
Today’s global society faces an array of new issues with the advent of emerging Internet-related technologies. Contents distribution of electronic books, music, and movies, cloud computing and standards such as HTML5 are just a few examples. Against this backdrop, increasingly more importance is being placed on the presence of research centers that resolve technology, policy, and legal issues concerning the Internet and society on a global and comprehensive basis. Internationally, research institutes such as the Berkman Center at Harvard University, The Center for Internet and Society at Stanford University, and the Research Center for Information Law at the University of St. Gallen are gaining influence through their research efforts related to the Internet and society. Now that a new global information society is about to take shape, there is a pressing need to establish a research organization in Japan that aligns itself with the aforementioned research institutions. This research laboratory will work in conjunction with those institutions by carrying out a comprehensive regime of research activities aimed at developing an open communication platform.
This laboratory will address the following types of issues:
- Standardization of digital technology
- Processing of intellectual property rights
- Contents distribution platforms
- Electronic commerce and behavior-targeting ads
- Privacy protection and information utilization
- Information security
- Safety and reliability of the information infrastructure
